Bimlady: I said thank God there's an archive. I did not say I printed anything. No need to do that when everything is on the internet. Plus, printer ink is rather costly and I'm a frugal person who would never spend on printing out everything from a discussion board, interesting though the comments are. LOL!

Bimlady: When I saw the article on the up-and-coming soccer star of Arsenal and saw the name "Theo Walcott," I thought immediately here's another Barbadian for your book. Imagine my surprise to find, after a little research, that he's of Jamaican descent with no ties to Barbados. Apparently others have jumped to the same conclusion thinking he's related to the great Sir Clyde Walcott because the name Walcott is usually associated with Barbados. Anyhow, this guy is very young and in time may give Beckham a run for his money.

Bimlady: You're thinking of the great Oscar Peterson. I admired him, mainly his genius with the piano. But in my research I was rather surprised to learn that he suffered with arthritis since he was young and at times couldn't button his shirt! Plus, he practiced several hours a day. I have even more admiration for him when I imagine what he went through to perfect his craft. May his soul forever rest in peace.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Peterson
**************************************
A bit more about Theo Walcott. One thing all these super-sucessful people have in common whether it's music, sports, medicine, the arts, etc., is an incredible amount of discipline and singularity of purpose.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1054853/Theo-Walcott-nati onal-hero--ask-mum-let-in.html
"The joy was shared by Walcott's grandparents.
Jamaican-born Loretta Walcott and her husband Wendell, of Carterton, near Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, said they were 'very pleased'."

Hi bimbro why you do not want to be in this book "shame on you" this book is for the Children of Barbados.....
THE FIRST BARBADIANS IN AMERICA
Barbadian connection with America dates back to the 1660s, when close links were established between Barbados and the Carolinas, Sir John Colleton, a prominent Barbadian planter, was among the first to suggest the establishment of a colony there, and in 1670 a permanent colony was established in what is known today as Charleston, South Carolina. Many prominent. Barbadian merchants and planters subsequently migranted to Carolina, among them Sir John Yeamans, who became governor, these Barbadians contributed knowledge, lifestyle and sugar economy, along with place names, and dialect to Carolina, For example, gullah, the dialect of the Carolina coast and islands, resembles Barbadian dialect. After the nineteenth-century Emancipation, Barbadian became a part of the flow of West Indian immigrants into the United States/

WALTER TULL
Walter Daniel John tull (28 April 1988 - 25 March 1918) tull was the first black outfield player in the top division of the football League, and the first black infantry officer in the British Army.
tull was born in folkestone, Kent, the son of Bajan carpenter Daniel tull and a local woman alice Palmer, He begun his education in what is now Mundella Primary School, Following the death of his parents he was brought up in a National Children's Home orphanage in bethnal Green with his brother Edward. He signed for tottenham Hotspur in 1909, after a close season tour of Argentina and Uruguay, making him the first black professional footballer to play in Latin america. He made his debut for tottenham in September 10=909 at inside forward against Sunderland but only made seven first-team appearances before he was dropped to the reserves. this may have been due to the racial abuse he received from opposing fans particularly at Bristol City, whose supporters used language, "Lower than Billingsgate" according to a report at the time in the Football Star newspaper, Further appearances in the first team were recorded before tull was bought by Herbert Chapman's Northampton town in October 1911 for a "substantial fee" tull made 110 first - team appearances for the club. When war broke out tull enlisted in the army, in December 1914, the first Northampton town player to do so, it was reported in newspapers that Tull had signed to play for Rangers once the war was over.
During the first World War tull served in both Footballers' Battalions of the Middlesex Regiment. 17th and 23rd, rising to the rank of sergeant and fighting in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. When tull was cormmissioned as Second Lieutenant in May 1917 he became the first black combat officer in the British Army; this was unprecedented at the time as the 1914 Manual of Military Law specifically excluded Negroes from exercising actual control as officers. Despite this, tull's superior officers recommended him. tull fought in Italy in 1917/18, and was mentioned in dispatches by Major General sydney Lawford for gallantry and coolness while leading his company of 26 men on a raiding party, to cross the fast-flowing rapids of the River Piave into enemy territory. For bringing his men back unharmed tull was recommended for a Military cross. He returned to northern France in 1918, and was killed in action on 25 March during the last German offensive of the first World War, near the village of Favreuil in the Pas De Calais. His body was never recovered, despite the efforts of Private Billingham to return him while under fire. Walter tull is remembered at The Arras Memorial, Bay 7, for those who have no known grave. He fought in six major battles; Ancre, Nobember 1916 (first Battle of the somme) Messines, June 1917 3rd Ypres, July- August 1917 (Passchendaele) Menin road Bridge, September 1917; St quentin, March 1918 (2nd Somme) bapaume, March 1918 (2nd somme)
In the history of black footballers in Britian, tull may be mentioned alongside Arthur Wharton, a goalkeeper for rotherham United F.c who became the first black professional in 1889, and Andrew Watson, an amateur, who is credited as the earlier black international football player, winning his first cap for Scotland in 1881.
LEGACY
Plans are under way to make a film about the life of Walter Tull and campaigners are calling for a statue to be erected in his honour at Dover. two films have been nade for teachers TV focussing on teaching about Walter tull Memorial Cup. Rangers won the Cup after defeating Spurs 2-0 with goals from Dado Prso and Nacho Novo on the 28th of July.
Northampton South MP Brian binley has begun campaigning for tull to be awarded the Military Cross posthumously.
A book on the life of Walter tull written for young people by Michaela Morgan. Published by Barrington Stoke 2005 ISBN 9781842993378. the book wa shortlisted in the Birmingham Libraries young readers book festival May 2008.
Walter's war, a drama written by Kwane Kwei-Armah and based on tull's life, was made by UK channel BBC Four to be screened as part of the BBC's Niney Years of Remembrance season in November 2008.
MEMORIAL
On Sunday July 11, 1999 Northampton Town F.c unveiled a memorial to Walter in a dedicated Garden of Remembrance at Sixfields Stadium. the epitaph inscribed there reads:
through his actions, tull ridiculed the barriers of ignorance that tried to deny people of colour equality with their contemporaries, His life stands testament to a determination to confront those people and those obstacles that sough to dimish him and the world in which he lived. It reveals a man, though rendered breathless in his prime, whose strong heart still beats loudly.
The words were written by Phil Vasili, author of Colouring Over the White Line; History of Black Footballers in Britain (ISBN 1-84018-296-2)

OLIVER SKEETE
Oliver Skeete (born 26 March 1956 in Speightstown, Barbados) is a British showjumper turned reality show contestant and actor.
BIOGRAPHY
One of a family of 10 (4 brothers and 5 sisters) Skeet travelled to England in September 1964 to join his parents who had settled in Acton. west London, and attended local schools to the age of fifteen. On leaving school Skeete qualified as a motor mechanic 3 years later. His main sporting interest at this time was football and he played for a local youth team.
Skeete was first introduced to the world of horses by a chance meeting with a Spanish Countess in a night-club However, this was not a successful introduction as Skeete was left bruised and embarrassed after being thrown in Hyde Park. After marriage to another lady and two daughters to entertain, Skeete enrolled them at a local riding school. He found that his enthusiasm gre with theirs and decided to chance his luck once more.
Skeet sold the family car to purchase his first horse, and started show jumping in 1992, aged 36. He has competed at most levels except the very top. Skeet intended to represent Barbados at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000, show jumping under the Barbadian Flag, but he did not gain the requied number of points for qualification.
AFTER SHOW JUMPING.
Skeet attained a level of fame which was out of proportion to his modest achievements as a showjumper, this was partly due to his status as a dredlocked black competitor in the overwhelmingly white world of showjumping, appearing in TV shows such as ITV's Celevrity Wrestling and The Mint, Sky One's Brainiac; Science Abuse and Five's the all Star Show and Diet Doctors. He also had a minor role in the bond movie die another Day, where he delivered Pierce Brosman a key.
He is currently working on Brit Flick "Clubbing to Death" with Nick Moran, Huey Morgan & Dave Courtney, due for release in 2007.
Skeet's autobiography is called "Jumping the Odds: Memoirs of a Rastafarian Showjumper"
He is currently represented by Celeb Agents

He also issued a public statement saying he forgave Arsenal for how he felt he was treated during his time there. On 31 January 2007, cole suffered a serious knee injury in the 3-0 victory over blackburn rovers in a Premier League game at Stamford Bridge, although after a scan it was revealed to be not as bad as first thought, with Chelsea optimistic that he would return before the end of the 2006-07 season. Several analysts noted Ifill's conflict of interest regarding the book, including Kelly McBride of the Paynter Institute for Media Studies who said, Obviously the book will be much more valuable to her if Obama is elected( not if when) Ifill responded to criticism by stating "I've got a pretty long track record covering politics and news, so I'm not particularly worried that one-day blog chatter is going to destroy my reputation. the proof is in the pudding. they can watch the debate tomorrow night and make their own decisions about whether or not I've done my jov. After the debate, Ifill received praise for her performance with the Boston globe reporting that she "is receiving high marks for equal treatment of the candidates."(all the best with your book)

BRET SCHUNDLER
Bret D Schundler (born January 14, 1959 in colonia, New Jersey) is an American republican Party politician from the U.s state of New Jersey. He was the mayor of Jersey City from 1992 until 2001. He was the unsuccessful republican nominee for governor of New Jersey in 2001 and he was an unsuccessful candidate for the republican gubernatorial nomination in 2005.
Pre Political career.
Schundler grew up in woodbridge township and Westfield, New Jersey as the youngest of nine children. In high school, he was an All-state football player. He was recruited by Harvard University, where, to help pay for his tution, he washed dishes, cleaned bathrooms, and worked as a security guard. He graduated with honors in 1981, Schundler's ethnic heritage is
German and Barbadian.
Fpllowing his graduation from college, schundler worked for liberal Democratic congressman roy Dyson of Maryland. He late worked for Gary Hart's 1984 presidential campaign. after Hart lost the primary, Schundler began his career in finance in the sales department of Salomon broters, while he had no experience in the field his interviewer thought that anyone who could sell Hart in Western Iowa Had a future in finance. In 1987, he moved to a different firm, C.J. Lawrence, which has since been absorbed into Deutsche bank. He retired in 1990, and after traveling around the world for a year, changed his registration to Republican.
MAYOR OF JERSEY CITY
His first run for elective office was an unsuccessful campaign for the New Jersey Senate in 1991, where despite the partisan nature of the election and the overwhelmingly Democratic composition of the district (only 6% of voters were registered Republicans) Schundler received 46% of the vote. the next year. gerald McCann wasremoved as mayor of Jersey City because of a criminal conviction unrelated to his public duties, and Schundler entered the special election to finish the remaining eight months of McCann;s term. He won the election with 17 percent of the vote in a crowded field of 19 candidates. Also, he did not run "as a Republican" since Jersey City holds non-partisan elections. A major reason for his victory was that two African American candidates split votes and two siblings (Lou and Allen Manzo) also split a large number of votes.
Once in office, Schundler tried to develop a reputation as a politician who couldn't "bought off" He believed this would strongly resonated in a city with a long legacy of corruption dating to the Frank Hague era. He subsequently won a full term in 1993 with 69% of the vote - the largest margin of victory since Jersey city returned to the Mayor-Council form of government in 1961, and according to some sources, in the city's entire history, He won a second full term in 1997, though not without controversy. Since no candidate received 50 percent, a run-off election was ordered by a judge. which Schundler won by a substantial margin.
During his tenure as mayor, Schundler supporters claim he dramatically reduced crime, which was lowering nationally at the time, lowered property taxes, increased the city's tax collection rate and property values, instituted medical saving accounts for city employees and privatized the management of the city's water utility. He also led the fight to pass New Jersey's chartr school legislation, Moreover, according to a Harvard University study, during his tenure Jersey City led the 100 largest cities in America in job growth and proverty reduction.
Schundler attracted considerable national attention because he was the Republican mayore of an overwhelmingly Democratic city even though when running for Mayor, he never actually ran as a republican and the word republican never appeared on any campaign literature or ads, However, during his tenure, Jersey City remained a Democratic stronghold, as it has been for over a century. Indeed, on the same night as Schundler's special election win, bill clinton carried Hudson County (which includes Jersey City) by an overwhelming margin, which was enough to swing New Jersey into the Democratic column for the first time since 1964. Clinton carried Hudson County by an even larger margin in 1996. Additionally, no republican has represented a significant portion of Jersey City in congress in over a century, and Schundler was succeeded by a Democrat, glenn cunningham, in 2001.

NORMA SKLAREK; THE 1ST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN ARCHITECT/
Author Malsah b. Robinson, Ph.D
Published on February 8, 2007
Norma sklarek is a pioneer in many areas of the architectural profession, In 1954, she became licensed as an architect in the State of New York. It would be twenty years before another black woman would achieve the status of licensed architect, In 1966, she became the first black woman to be licensed as an architect in California. For her outstanding contribution to architecture, Sklarek became the first black woman to be honored by her peers with a fellowship in AIA.
At the time of the award in 1980, only 43 female architects had been named Fellow by the american institute of Architects (AIA) Sklarek was born on April 15, 1928, during the Depression. Her west Indian parents, from the Caribbean, were living in Harlem, New York at the time of her birth. Her mother, Amy Willoughby was born in BARBADOS and her father. Dr Walter Ernest Merrick was born in ST. VINCENT. Norma recalls, "My father was a doctor, but we were poor in terms of money, so we did lots of things around the house ourselves. It was during the Depression, so we could not efford to hire someone else to do the work.
I believe that these early childhood experiences helped develop my sense of self-sufficiency. "I was fortunate to have attended elementary, junior high, and high school in public schools that were outstanding academically. My high school was Hunter High, and all girls magnate school, which only accepted the best students who scored high on admission fests in English and Mathematics from New York City's five boroughs. It was therefore, not a neighborhood school, but one to which students rode busses or subways for many miles. "even though Norma was an only child, she was not spoiled.
She credits her Father with nurturing the desire to pursue a traditionally nale profession. "Although both my parents spent a lot of time with me. I did lots of things with my father that girls did not ordinarily do, things like going fishing, painting the house, and doing carpentry work. I think that because of my father's influence. the typical female careers did not appeal to me. My grades were good enough to consider any profession, but I had an interest in art, the sciences, and math, During the time I was thinking about my career choices, my father said, "What about architecture? Before he suggested it. I had never considered that profession. the field of architecture required all the skills and interests that I had, so I seriously considered his suggestion".
Sklarek chose to study at Columbia University's School of Architecture, During the late 1940"s when Norma applied to Columbia, a quota system existed for women. the School of architecture only admitted a small number of women each year Sklarek recalls. "Other colleges at Columbia may have had similar gender and racial quotas, but it was quite obvious in architecture. The School didn't want to waste space on women. they felt that women would get married and return home to have children. The competition for admittance was fierce for women"
She studied liberal arts for one year at Barnard college and four years at Columbia University School of Architecture, from which she recived a Bachelor of Architecture in 1950, "I remember my first year at columbia. I had a hard time because everything was so different from high school. I was working very hard just to keep up. I was not getting A's, I was just trying to pass the courses. I spent the summer considering whether to return to columbia in the Fall. I decided to return, "Sklarek admits that architecture school was tough. At Columbia, her classmates consisted of students who were war veterans, some with bachelor and master's degrees.
Sklarek had entered with a minimum requirement of one year of liberal arts, "I was the youngest in my class. these classmates were not only older but much more mature than I. the competition in class was keen. But I had to "stick-to-it attitude and never gave up. the rewards were even more evident as I was able to pass all seven parts of the four - day- 36-hour architect's licensing exams the first time I took it, something often unheard of at that time. Many of my fellow colleagues were not so fortunate. My passing the exam surprised many people. the dean of the school told me that even some straight - A students in my class had not passed the exam the first time."
Sklarek recalls that breaking into the field was not easy. "Even after graduation from school, with a professional architectural degree, it was tough to get a job. I applied and went to about twenty different offices before I was able to land an entry level job. I could never figure it out. I don't know if the rejections were because I was a black person, because I was a young woman, or because of the economic recession at the time. Since I was turned down so many times in private industry, I went to work for the city of New York in a civil service job with the Department of Public Works, I decided very quickly that civil service was not where I wanted to be."
Next was a four year stint with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, at that time, one of the largest and most prestigious architectural firm in the United States, Sklarek moved from New York to Los Angeles, joining the firm of Gruen Associates in 1960. As the first female Director of Architecture of gruen Associates, Sklarek headed its large architectural department and was responsible for all of the technical do*****ents on an impressive list of commercial, award-winning projects.
Some of Sklarek's many significant projects include; the American Embassy in tokyo, Japan; the Fox Hills Mall in culver City, CA., which recived a Citation for Design Excellence from the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the California Mart, a 2.5 million-square foot international merchandising comples, which holds the distinction of being the largest fashion center in the world, and the San Bernardino, CA City Hall, selected as one of the Nation's Outstanding City Halls by the Library of Congress and the American Institute of Architects. Sklarek stayed with Gruen for twenty years.
My years at Gruen provided me with opportunities to engage in all aspects of the architectural field. It was truly a rewarding experience and prepared me for the challenges I would face with the next firm I joined, "After leaving the Gruen firm, Sklarek joined Welton Becket Associates as a Vice President, serving as Project director for Passenger Terminal One, accommondating 10 million annual passengers at Los Angeles International Airport.
Sklarek recalls, " I learned a lot from the Terminal One Project. My experience on the project, which had to be ready for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, tested my ability to work under pressure and complete projects on time. I was the only vice president that Welton Becket Hadln 1985, Sklarek became a principal in a firm headed by three women, Siegel-Sklarek, Diamond, one of the largest all-female owned architectural practices in the United States. The projects that her architectural firm was able to obtain commissions on were of a smaller nature than Sklarek was used to doing.
IN addition, she says, "I was not happy with the possibility of being personally fincially liable for anything which might go wrong during construction. For those reasons I left the firm, "From 1989 to 1992, Sklarek was a principal at the Jerde Partnership in charge of project management and review of the functional and technological aspects of projects. She was responsible for ensuring that the architectural detailing was complete and that the sophisticated engineering systems required for state-of-the art innovative buildings had been adequately incorporated in the architectural design.
Sklarek has been involved in comprehensive architectural pursuits in addition to her office practice. She has created professional renderings in tempera, taught on the graduate architectural staff of UCLA, and been a lecturer at Arizona State University, Columbia University, Hampton University, Howard University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Southern University, Tuskegee University, and the University of Utah.
She has served as director of the Los angeles chapte of the AIA, vice President of the California Council AIA, Commissioner to the California Board of Architectural Examiners and as Master Juror for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, (NCARB) grading the Design and Site Planning licensing papers.
Her writing activities include technical advisor of the Architectural Graphic Standards, and author of "Women in Architecture" in the Encyclopedia of Architecture & Construction. She was featured in I Drean a World, Portraits of Black Women Who Change America, and African american Architects in Current Practice, where she talks about her training and career, She is currently serving as Chair of the AIA National Ethics Council, Norma Sklarek is now Semi-retired but continues to serve as Chair of the AIA National Ethics Council, conduct classes for the architectural building design and site licensing exams, and guest lecture at architectural schools.

Bimlady, I spoke with Wilfred Wood (Bishop retired) this morning at Miami Beach and mentioned to him that he has a write-up on this forum; he told me that he will check it out. I also mentioned it to his sister in case it slips his memory.I certainly will give him your regards.
The beach near Long Bay in St. Philip is called "shark hole." I have never been there although, as a youngster, I learnt to swim at the Crane Beach and I occasionally swam at Foul Bay. My wife does not like the rough and tumble at the Crane and at Foul Bay so we go to Miami Beach. There has been much erosion at the Crane.

Law.com - Making history with Obama
page 3 Obama's speech, which tied together thoughts and feelings that holder had on the subject of race but had never so eloquently articulated, moved Holder to tears. As the candidate spoke, Holder says, he thought about his wife's sister Vivian Malone Jones, who was one of the first two African-American to enroll at the university of Alabama in the face of opposition from gov. George Wallace.
He also thought about his dad, an immigrant from Barbados, "He's a guy who came here as a kid 13, 14, 15 years old, something like that - and who loved this country I think in a way that only an immigrant can, "says Holder," And yet, you know, he tried to join the Army air Corps. and the thing that sticks in my mind is, they laughed at him. while he's (serving) in World ll and he's in his uniform in Oklahoms, he can't get served at a luncheon counter, He has to stand up in a train coming back from Fort bragg to Harlem. while he's in uniform. My father loved America, but he had that anger that Barack talked about."
Holder was born in the Bronx and grew up in east Elmhurst, then a mix of middle- class Italians (Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia is from the area) and African - American. His father sold real estate and his mother worked as a secretary. Neither of his parents went to college but they valued education and encouraged in Holder a strong ethic, He didn't need much motivation, accoring to his Mother, Miriam Holder. I think he was always mature beyong his years." she says www.law.com/jsp/article

the above Article written by David Johnston---has been revised to reflect the following corection:
Correction: November 14,2008
An Article on wednesday about Eric H Holder Jr., a possible nominee to be attorney general in the Obama administration, misstated the given name for the hostess of a dinner party where Mr. Holder first met Barack Obama in 2004. She is Ann Walker Marchant, not Alice.. sorry about that.

Caribbean-American Credit Union, Originally it started in my home. We were chartered in March of 1955, so We're in our 35th year going into our 35 year.
In those days, the average black, especially if you came from the Caribbean, they didn't have credit. and this town is built on credit. and, um, if they did go to any of the loan places to get credit, the loan financial institutions, banks would discriminate against them because they were blacks and they were foreigners and they had no credit. the financial companies would take advantage of them. some of the lending rates were as high as 25 percent, while (at) the bank {it} might have been [only] three or four or five percent. So my husband started the credit union.

Women of colour in the United States who are board-certified neurosurgeons number only six. a staggering thought for Deborah Blades, who, when she earned her certification in neurosurgery from the American board of Neurological Surgery in 1998, was the fourth Africian american Woman to do so. growing up in the projects of Williamsburg, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of West Indies-born parents, she single-mindedly pursued her goal of becoming a doctor. Her dream led her to Case's School of Medicine, from which she graduated in 1986, followed by fellowships in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery. Upon earning her credentials, she was tapped for a position as a spine surgery specialist at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. blades is now establishing her own neurosurgery and spinal reconstruction practice. she is doing so in Barbados, the homeland of her parents. With her new young son, Colin, she left American in July, to begin life anew.
I always had a dream: I wanted to be a physician. from age three, that was my course.
MY dad would always be the one to read me my nighttime story and put me to bed. Invariably, as he was reading to me, I was looking at his eyes, looking in his ears, looking in his nose, as though I was examining him. He would always say, "Are you my doctor or someting? Pay attention to the story."
I've had mentors throughout my life who've always made it very clear; You are a physician first, a surgeon second.
the first time I heard anything negative was when I started in Kentucky. I went to see a patient, who I was about to operate upon. the Patient was a very dear older gentleman. I walked into the room with my nurse, and the son said to the father, and, I apologize, but he said to him, "YOu 're going to let this nigger operate on you?" so I said to the gentelean who spoke, "oh, excuse me, do you have further questions about the surgery? and I looked at the patient and said, "do you have any questions? I want to make sure everybody is on the same page. "And the gentleman looked at me and he said, "Dr. blades, I have no questions. You explained everything very well. Let's get this going. "I shook his hand. I ignored the other gentleman as I walked out. I walked out of the room, and, I have to say, I broke down intears. And my nurse said, "YOu know, Dr. Blades, don't worry about it. It's OK if you don't want to do the surgery. I'll go back in and explain. "And I said, "No, no, no, no, I'm OK. Let's just get this done."
Once I set my mind on something, I'm not going to be swayed
My parents came to the United States (from Barbados) and they worked hard, they sacrificed for their children.
What matter most to me is that I am able to be the kind of parent that my child deserves and that my parents were to me.
When my dad passed, I realized that I did not want to raise my son not knowing his family and the legacy from which he comes, the family that we had was in Barbados, for the most part. It was a difficult decision, but I needed to do what I felt was proper for my son. and that was to bring him to his grandparents" birthplace and raise him wher he could hear stories about them. where he could know his great-great aunts, great-great-uncles, and cousins..
Dr Blades welcome home...and I wish you and your sons God Blessing

FAMOUS BARBADIANS |

by Althea Romeo-Mark
THE BARCLAYS; A BARADIAN-LIBERIAN CONNECTION
Many barbadian are unaware of the role their middle-sized island in the caribbean played in building the West African nation of Liberia. they would be surprised to find out that two of Liberia's presidents were of Barbadian ancestry. and not only that, both presidents came from the same family, the Barclays. In addition, the Barclay family consisted of very strong women who were the backbone to the success of their men.
According to Dr. Mary Antoinette Brown Sherman, the father of the family, Anthony Barclay, headed a group of 333 immigrants to Liberia. the Barclay family, which consisted of thirteen members, increased the group number to 346, the Barclay family was made up of eight daughters and three sons. the group left Barbados in April 1865, and arrived in Liberia in May 1865 the group of Barbadians was described in the African Repository as the most intelligent and best educated emigrants that ever came to Liberia and equally industrious.
Dr. Antoinette Brown Sherman Further states that "In the Century and a quarter that followed, they lived up to reputation, making significant contributions to the Liberian nation in such fields as the political, social, economic, and religious for example from the ranks of the Barclay family have come two Presidents of Liberia. a Chief Justice, four Secretaries of State. Two Associate Justices, other officials of the Liberian Government, a number of professionals, and the Wives of a number of prominent Liberian men.
THE EARLY MALE PIONEERS
Filmaker's Gerald K. Barclay's copy of an origianl family docment gives us a little history of the men in the family. we are informed that one of the brothers, Samuel Gerald, dies in Bridgetown, on the 17th of June 1854, at the age of five. the father of the family died at the age of 56 on January 16, one year after his arrival in Liberia. the do*****ent states that, "this thus left the responsiblility of rearing the family, and largely of looking after the entire immigration. upon his widow, Sarah ann Barclay, She became the rolemodel for the Barclay women.
The seond son, Earnest James Barclay, who was born in Bridgetown, Barbados, March 30th 1847 and who was the father of Arthur Barclay, died while Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, on the 8th of April, 1894. He had served in the position of Secretary of State of Liberia for two years. One week later, the eldest son, anthony Barclay;, who was born in Bridgetown, Barbados, on July 19th, 1842 died in Grand Bassa, Liberia, He was serving as the presiding judge of the Common Pleas Court of Grand Bassa at the time of his death.
Arthur Barclay
Arthur Barclay was born on July 31, 1854 in Bridgetown, Barbados, British West Indies. He was the tenth of twelve children of his parents, anthony and Sarah Ann Bourne Barclay;. Dr Fred P.M van der Kraaij, a Dutch national who taught at the university of Liberia in the 1970s. describes Arthur Barclay, in hisbook, The open Door Policy of Liberia, as being eleven years old upon the family's arrival in Liberia. Dr Van der Kraaij further tells us that the family settle in Monrovia where Arthur engaged in pretty-trading in the streets of the capital city. Monrovia may have had 5,000 inhabitants at the time. He goes on to say that Arthur BArclay was educated at Liberia College, studied law and became a counsellor-at-law. He was called to the Bar of Montserrado County in 1977. three years later he joined the Supreme Court. He also gained reputation as a scholar. Arthur Barclay's climb to success continued. He became interested in politics and held various positions in government until he reached the ultimate position - that of President of the Republic of Liberia, in 1903. He was re-elected twice thereafter, thus serving as President from 1904to 1912
